Spain Sets EUR 700 Daily Deposit Cap Across All Online Operators

Short answer: Spain will cap what a player can deposit across every licensed online gambling account at EUR 700 a day, EUR 1,750 a week and EUR 3,300 per four weeks by default. The limits come from Real Decreto 520/2026 of 24 June (BOE, 25 June 2026). The Dirección General de Ordenación del Juego (DGOJ) runs the system and opened it to players on 21 October 2026 through a new Player Portal. From March 2027, no operator may accept a deposit that the DGOJ system says would breach the joint limit.

Key points

  • Default joint limits of EUR 700 a day, EUR 1,750 a week and EUR 3,300 per four weeks, across all licensed operators.
  • Existing per-operator limits stay in force alongside them.
  • Operators must query the DGOJ system before accepting a deposit.
  • Increases or removal take effect after three working days, at most once every three months.
  • Binding nine months after publication: the DGOJ gives 26 March 2027 in its release and 25 March 2027 on its limits page.

What exactly is capped?

Deposits, not stakes or losses. A new Annex III to RD 1614/2011 sets the amounts and windows: a day runs from 06:00 to 06:00, a week from 06:00 on Tuesday to 06:00 the following Tuesday, and a four-week period from 06:00 on the Tuesday of week one. The DGOJ can change these amounts by resolution.

These windows differ from the per-operator limits, which the DGOJ describes as EUR 600 a day (00:00 to 24:00), EUR 1,500 a week (Monday to Sunday) and EUR 3,000 a calendar month. Both apply at once.

How does the cross-operator check work?

Under the new article 36 bis, the DGOJ holds the data and operators do not share it with each other. The operator consults the DGOJ system before accepting a deposit; if the deposit would take the player over the joint limit, the operator must refuse it and tell the player why. The DGOJ may publish a mandatory format and wording for that message.

The decree lists the data the DGOJ will process, including the identity document used to register with the operator, date of birth, contact details, the player’s joint limits, and deposits and deposit cancellations. The DGOJ says its tool checks compliance in real time.

What do cashier and payments teams need to build by March 2027?

The DGOJ had to give operators a test version six months before entry into force. Work to plan now:

  • Pre-authorisation check. Query the DGOJ system before accepting any deposit, on every payment method, and block on a breach. The decree sets no fallback if the service is unavailable.
  • Cancellation data. The DGOJ processes deposit cancellations as well as deposits, so reversals need to reach it or a player’s headroom will be wrong.
  • Identity matching. The check relies on the identity document used at registration, so KYC records need a clean, current document number.
  • Two limit engines. Keep the per-operator logic (calendar day, Monday week, calendar month) alongside the joint one (06:00 day, Tuesday week, four-week cycle).
  • Rejection messages. Use the DGOJ template once published and match support macros to it.
  • Safer gambling page. RD 520/2026 amends article 9.2(d) of RD 176/2023 so that each operator’s safer gambling information covers the joint system as well as its own limits.

How do players raise or remove the joint limit?

Only through the DGOJ, not the operator. Players manage joint limits in the Player Portal, accessed with Spain’s Cl@ve digital identity. Lower limits apply immediately. For an increase or removal, the DGOJ first shows information on gambling risks; the change takes effect after three working days, and no further increase or removal is allowed within three months of the last increase.

This differs from the per-operator route, where, according to the DGOJ, a player asking an operator to exceed the general limits must pass the regulator’s tests on addictive behaviour and safe play and show no risky behaviour over the previous three months. No such test is described for the joint limit.

What will players ask support?

  • “Why was my deposit declined when I have not hit your limit?” The answer is the joint limit, which counts deposits at other operators.
  • “Can you raise my limit?” Support cannot change the joint limit; the player must use the Player Portal, and increases take three working days.
  • “When does my limit reset?” At 06:00 each day, and weekly at 06:00 on Tuesday, not midnight.
  • “Which accounts are in my name?” The Player Portal lists them and shows deposits, stakes, winnings and losses.

Bots and agents should send limit increase requests to the portal rather than promise a change; igamingsupportai.com’s responsible gambling and AI support guide covers escalation rules. The same routing rule applies to AI agents handling player limit questions.

Frequently asked questions

When do Spain’s joint deposit limits become binding?

Nine months after Real Decreto 520/2026 was published on 25 June 2026. The DGOJ gives 26 March 2027 in its press release and 25 March 2027 on its limits page, so operators should be ready for the earlier date.

Do the joint limits replace per-operator limits?

No. The per-operator limits of EUR 600 a day, EUR 1,500 a week and EUR 3,000 a month stay in force, and both apply at the same time.

Can an operator raise a player’s joint limit?

No. Only the player can change it, through the DGOJ Player Portal. Lower limits apply at once; increases or removal take effect after three working days, at most once every three months.

What happens when a deposit would breach the joint limit?

The operator must check the DGOJ system before accepting the deposit, refuse it if it would breach the joint limit, and tell the player why.
